Legion Post 247
As Americans, we owe our veterans a debt of gratitude for their contributions to the defense and safety of our country. In 1919, Congress chartered and incorporated The American Legion which has become the nation’s largest veterans’ service organization. It is committed to mentoring and sponsoring youth programs, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting a strong national security, and providing continued support of fellow service members and veterans.
Our local post, American Legion Post 247 (Frisbee-Eidenmiller-McCaig) was named in memory of three local World War I veterans who died during the war. Our post has played an active role in the community through Legion Baseball in addition to sponsoring an annual participant to Cornhuskers’ Boys State. This past year we also sponsored a participant to the Junior Law Enforcement Academy. In 2009 thanks to a very well received fundraising drive, the flagpoles at the Elmwood Cemetery were replaced with 46 new telescoping poles. Our main emphasis over the past few years, has been the establishment of a Veterans’ Museum in the Elmwood G.A.R. Hall. Here visitors can take a walk back in time to see how the residents of the Elmwood community have answered the call to help defend our nation.
